Oakes and Smith-Live Acoustic 2/10 7-10pm

Both Robert Oakes and Katherine Smith were born into musical families and started performing at a very young age. Robert began as a kid singing and playing bass guitar with his blues-singing father’s band. Later, he played and sang in countless garage bands with his brother and friends from surrounding New Jersey towns, before going on to self-produce several albums of original songs and perform in many New York City-area venues. Katherine, whose grandfather, great aunts and uncles, father and mother all sang, started harmonizing as a teenager with her parents’ Connecticut-based choral group. She then went on to perform musical theater pieces, jazz and pop songs in high school and college productions. Katherine has also combined her love of singing with an affinity for visual art and acting.

Robert and Katherine met in 2007 while Robert was working on his 2009 album ‘Heart Broken Open.’ Katherine contributed vocals and artwork to that project, and the two quickly realized there was even more to be drawn from this collaboration. The duo formed in the winter of 2010 in the Berkshire Hills of Western Massachusetts, where they both live. They began arranging some of Robert’s earlier material and writing new songs together, then quickly set about recording a six-song demo, recruiting band members for live shows and making plans to record a full-length album. They started playing out together in spring 2010, and spent the summer months playing shows in cafes and bars, at festivals and arts centers and busking on street corners from Maine to New Jersey, where their music was met consistently with a warm and enthusiastic response.
During 2011, Robert and Katherine began production of their debut full-length album in Woodstock, NY and are currently working on it, hoping to put it out in mid-2012.

KYLE MILLER Live at the Studios 12/27 7-10PM

Hudson Valley based singer-songwriter Kyle James Miller began playing professionally at fifteen, cutting his teeth on folk and blues standards while writing his own music. Miller is currently studying English Literature at the State University of New York at New Paltz and plays frequently in the New Paltz area.Kyle James Miller has performed at the historic Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs as well as The Falcon in Marlboro, NY and is featured in the Library of Congress performing for Caffe Lena’s Bob Dylan 70th Birthday Tribute Concert. In November 2011 he will begin production of a full length LP in conjunction with New Paltz based  Salvation Recording Company. He is hopeful that the album will be noticed by a few passionate individuals and disregarded by everyone else.

Miller began playing the guitar several years ago and playing harmonica soon after that. He discovered folk and blues music while listening to his fathers extensive music collection and artists like Eric Clapton, Levon Helm, Bob Dylan and JJ Cale. The discovery opened up his eyes to what he considers the bedrock of american music: folk, blues, rock n’ roll, and country. His interest in those genres would ultimately lead to many attempts at writing his own songs. In 2008, he released an album of original songs entitled “Better Off.” Since that disc he has continued to write songs but until recently has yet to compile another disc. He hopes to put a band together of like minded, capable musicians. This search is proving difficult however. He has also been continuing to perform in order to develop his own distinct style as both a writer and performer.

Don’t miss this special concert event held in your back yard.  Desolation Road Studios is proud to present what it considers one of the most interesting musicians to come along in quite a while!
