Sidewalk Chalk Competition
Saturday, June 2nd, 2012
(Rain Date: June 3rd, 2012)
- Artists can begin working on their panel at 9:00 am and must be complete by 3:00 pm. Judging will take place at 3:30pm and you must be present to win.
- There are roughly 75 squares available on a first come, first serve basis. Get to the competition early enough to choose where you would like to work.
- A broom will be provided to share for sweeping off your area before you begin.
- Art must be family-friendly- No nude or lewd artwork.
- No political or commercial advertising statements.
- Squares are approximately 5’X5’.
- You may not bring your own chalk to use. One package of chalk is supplied with the purchase of your square, and additional chalk packages may be purchased. If you purchase additional squares, one package of chalk will be provided for each square. You can trade individual colors with other contestants, if you choose.
- You have a choice of pastel chalks or bright colors. You will have the same choice the day of the competition, while supplies of each color lasts.
- Hair spray or fixative is prohibited.
- Participants will compete for three prizes: First place ($100.00), Second place ($75.00), and People’s Choice ($75.00).
- Judging is based on creativity, originality, skill and use of color.
- Decisions of the judges and organizers are final.
- Digital photos may be taken and used for publicity purposes.
- Organizers have the right to disqualify and/or remove any inappropriate art or writings, as they may deem necessary.
- There will be a non-competitive area designated for children under the age of 12 to draw- free of charge.
- Be courteous of the participants next to you. Do not walk on other’s work area, or blow loose chalk their direction.
- Bring sun screen, and wear clothes that you do not value, as chalk does not wash out very well. Gardening gloves are recommended to protect your fingertips, and knee pads for your knees.
- Purchases are non-refundable.

2012 Altamont Art in the Parks Juried Arts & Craft Show and Sidewalk Chalk Competition
Orsini and Schilling Parks in the Village of Altamont, NY
$75.00 Booth Fee and $10.00 Jury Fee
Desolation Road Studios welcomes fine artists and craftspeople to our Spring Outdoor Arts & Crafts Show. We have a large show planned and expect to have 20 fine artists and 30 craftspeople displaying their works for sale in both Orsini and Schilling Parks. Live entertainment is planned with the Lost Radio Rounders and Kyle Miller. A Sidewalk Chalk Art Competition (by separate application)will also be happening on the sidewalks on the north side of Maple Ave between the parks from 9am-3pm. Space is limited for this show so please apply early!
General Information/Regulations:
All work exhibited or offered for sale must be the original design and product of the exhibitor and will be representative of the works submitted for acceptance.
Artists must man their booth for all hours of the show. In the event of inclement weather, the show will proceed as scheduled on the rain date. It will be at the discretion of Desolation Road Studios as to when to call the rain date or close the show due to dangerous weather conditions. Vendors must remain set up for the entire duration of the show and not break down any displays until the show ends. Breaking down booths early is a disruption to the event, as well as to your neighboring vendors.
No pets owned by exhibitors will be allowed on show grounds at any time including set up and break down of booths/displays.
Artist must provide a suitable, attractive display, support, racks, stands, and covered tables for work which must fit in a 10×10 ft square space. All safety precautions must be taken in setting up the exhibits. Artists are responsible for keeping their display area neat and clean at all times. Boxes and packing materials must be hidden. There is no staking in the ground to hold tents in either park– please use weights. All artists’ booth space will be clearly identified by artist’s name and booth number as provided by Desolation Road Studios.
Setup starts at 7:30 AM on Saturday June 2nd. ALL VEHICLES, after unloading, must be parked in the Altamont Enterprise Public Lot. The perimeter of the parks will be used as a LOADING ZONES. It may be helpful to bring a hand truck to assist you in moving your work and display.
Desolation Road Studios shall not be held liable for failure to perform or fulfill its contractual obligation provided such failure is caused or furthered by closure of site locations due to any cause or causes beyond its control, including, but not limited to, acts of God, acts of nature, fire, flood, public disaster, government enactment or any other cause or causes beyond its control.
Desolation Road Studios reserves the right to reject or remove any and all works it may deem contrary to the show’s integrity and best interest, at its absolute discretion. Any Buy/Sell display will be removed and fee not refunded.

Waiver: I will not hold Desolation Road Studios, its employees and volunteers, the show committee, its sponsors or the Village of Altamont responsible for loss or damage to art entered in the show or articles used for display. I agree to be no part of any legal action against the sponsors or committee members of the show.
Agreement: As evidenced by my signature affixed below, I agree, as material terms and conditions of this contract as follows:
1. I herein indemnify and hold Desolation Road Studios harmless from any and all claims arising from loss or damage to items exhibited by me, whether same be my work. This indemnification shall extend to and include claims by third parties, assignees and/or insurers by way of subrogation.
2. I hereby covenant and agree that I am either covered by liability insurance, or am self-insured. I bear the legal responsibility for any acts by me, my agents and employees, either intentional or negligent, that result in injury or death to third persons or damage to the property of third persons, included but not limited to the general public and other exhibitors, their agents and/or employees and hereby indemnify and hold Desolation Road Studios, its employees and volunteers, the show committee, its sponsors and the Village of Altamont, NY, harmless from any liability, loss or damages arising from any such acts.
3. All work exhibited or offered for sale are my original design and product and will be representative of the works submitted for acceptance.
4. I give the show committee permission to photograph my work and booth space and allow them to use these photographs in future marketing of this
show and other events.
5. All artists’ booth space will be clearly identified by artist’s name and booth number as provided by Desolation Road Studios. All space assignments
are the final decision of the show directors.
6. As per Municipal Code of the Village of Altamont, NY, there is no staking of tents on the Village Greens. Sufficient weights must be used.
7. No pets allowed by vendors at ANY time.
8. No refunds or substituted shows will be allowed.
9. I have fully read and understand each and every item set forth in the attached general information/regulations forwarded to me with this contract
and agree to be known by the same to the extent as is fully set forth herein.

Enjoy a night of wine and painting! It doesn’t matter what your artistic skill level is because this class is designed to let you relax, sip wine and socialize with friends while casually creating your very own acrylic painting. We’ll come together to learn a few things about acrylic painting, exploring how to mix colors, choose a style to paint in and experiment with different techniques. Everything you need to paint your masterpiece will be set up for you when you arrive. All materials and supplies are included so all you have to do is show up and start having fun! Wine is complementary. You will walk away with your very own completed acrylic painting on canvas. Please wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty, however smocks will be provided. These lessons will be either individual or group lessons based on attendance and will range from $15.00-$50.00 in cost depending on the techniques and materials needed to put the lessons on. Pine Needle Basket Making w/ Anita Wahlen 2/25 9AM-3PM

Using Southern Longleaf Pine Needles, participants will make a basket using the coiled technique of Native American Basket makers. A brief history of materials(collection and preparation) will also be presented. This technique requires concentration and patience, but participants will be rewarded with a beautiful and unique basket.
Things to bring to class: Scissors, Embroidery Scissors (if you have them)and a small kitchen towel to wrap the needles.
Class fee is $35.00 for a six hour class. Standard material fee is $6.00 however Anita has embellishments and additional materials you can purchase to make your basket even more unique should you wish to.
